Senate President of National
Association of Polytechnic students (NAPS) Comrade
Lukman Salahudeen has
passed a vote of confidence on the Nigeria Labour Congress factional body ,
Comrade Joe Ajaero
BEING A TEXT OF PRESS BRIEFING BY
THE SENATE PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS (NAPS) ON
THE STATE OF THE NATION AND VOTE OF CONFIDENCE ON COMRADE MR. JOE AJAERO, NLC
PRESIDENT.
Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen
of the press. Having observed with keen interest, the recent developments in
our dear nation Nigeria and the ongoing events in NLC, it has become partinent
that we make known the position of the Polytechnic students in Nigeria and
Nigerians at large.
Kindly permit me to start by
sincerely appreciating the continous effort of the medias towards the progress,
development and unity of this Nation. So much depends on you especially in time
like this when we are confronted as a people with threating challenges, ranging
from insecurity, religious and ethnic animosity, among others. These challenges
have become arguably prominent and pronounced because of the forth coming
General Elections.
We brave to say categorically that
the medias has played positive roles, as a mouth piece of the masses and common
man. Through your reportage, balanced analysis, investigative journalism and
unbiased criticism, you set the stage for the emergence of a just and
egalitarian society. This we are still quite far from achieving, yes we are
always reassured by your continoues efforts that we are making progress. The
NAPS salute you.
STATE OF THE NATION
We wish to use this medium to salute
the Nigerian Military for their winning war against Boko – Haram, a cankerworm
that has caused a lot of cancerious decay to the Nigeria economy. We note with
all sense of sincerity that the war against insurgency is a war against evil; a
war against insurgency is a victory for Nigerian Democracy. We stand with the
Nigerian Millitary in this trying period because we know that this is a
selfless dedication and service to their fatherland.
We implore all Nigerian to be law
abiding during the forth coming election. We advise Nigerians to shun violence
during the election, get their PVC’s and vote.
AN X-RAY FOR THE REASONS OF
DECLARING OUR SUPPORT TO COMRADE JOE AJAERO
We have observed that the election
that produced Ayuba Wabba was manipulated to favour certain interest, where
delegates from South East, South South and South West were denied access to the
venue of the election. Delegates from other Unions, like the pensions Union,
were eventually allowed entrance to the Eagle Square Venue of the election,
most of them, Particularly those from lagos, were stopped and their tags
retrieved and given to other people from other areas to vote.
After voting, Prior to the sorting
it was clear comrade Joe Ajaero had received that highest numbers of votes
cast. Till in the Night when light went off suddenly.
The election was characterized by
irregularities, rigging and biased to favour a candidate. 22 Unions including
electricity Workers Union, Nigeria Textile Workers Union and Nigerian Union of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), among others throws their weight
behind the newly elected president Comrade Joe Ajaero.
OUR POSITION ON THE NLC ELECTION
The senate Arm of NAPS recognises
Comrade Jeo Ajaero as the newly elected President of Nigerian Labour Congress
and passes a vote of confidence on his leadership.
This became imperative because of
his outstanding dexterous skills and positive acumen right from the Military era
till now where he played an active part in the power reform.
We need a president that will
reposition the once – vibrant Union.
It is very obvious that the NLC
movement under Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar has lost a significant amount of
prestige and influence in the eyes of the Nigeria people and the Nigerian
Public at large.
The Nigeria people no longer see the
Congress as the voice of the voiceless and a bulkwark against socio economic
and political oppression and injustices in the polity. The congress is
essentially viewed as either being complicit, or at best, indifferent to the
cries of the working class people and the middle class citizens who are daily
at the receiving end of an unjust social order.
For the NLC Leadership to regain its
influence, Comrade Ajaero must see his unique role beyond mere “Bread and
Butter”.
It is against this backdrop that
Comrade Ajaero Leadership must see its historic role beyond the “Bread and
Butter” issues, to re-assert its independence, reconnect with grassroots
worker.
We advised the new Congress
Leadership to sharpen its capacity to engage public and private institutions at
all levels to provide the necessary checks and balance.
God Bless Nigeria!
God Bless NAPS!
Thanks
Comrade Lukman Salahudeen
