The governorship candidate of the
Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, said on Tuesday
that he had obtained a promise from President Goodluck Jonathan
that a
political solution would be reached on the disagreement between Rivers and
Bayelsa states over the Soku oil wells.
The Rivers State Governor, Mr.
Rotimi Amaechi, had alleged that the Soku oil wells were unduly ceded to
Bayelsa State with the influence of Jonathan.
But Wike, who spoke when he met
traditional rulers from the coastal communities of Soku in Akuku-Toru Local
Government Area, assured the people of Soku that he possessed the political
will and capacity to resolve the Soku oil well conflict to the benefit of the
people of the state.
Wike explained that he had informed
Jonathan on Monday evening during a meeting the President held with PDP
governorship candidates that he would be visiting Soku, adding that the
President gave him a message for the people of the area.
He added, “President Jonathan asked
me to say directly to you that he is an Ijaw son; he is your brother and
therefore, you should not allow people to carry false propaganda to divide two
brothers.
“He has asked me to tell you that it
is not correct to say that he took Soku oil wells and gave them to Bayelsa
State. President Jonathan asked me to tell you that the Soku Oil well conflict
started earlier between Bayelsa and Rivers states, but that it will be sorted
out politically.
“We have the political will and
capacity to resolve this conflict. I will not be a party to ceding any part of
Rivers State to another state.”
