The people of Amafor community,
Nkpor town in Anambra State are now happy courtesy of their illustrious son who
recently donated a borehole to them free-of-charge.
The provision of potable water in
Anambra State is still a major challenge since the state Water Corporation
Board is still lying moribund despite millions of naira sunk into the project.
Citizens of the state, therefore,
still rely on private borehole operators and water tankers to solve their water
needs at great risk of infections and exorbitant monetary costs.
It was, therefore, a great relief
for the Amafor community when a borehole project initiated by Ebelechukwu
Foundation was commissioned recently.
The water project, the 13th to be
executed by the foundation for different communities in Nkpor, Idemili North
Local Government Area, is to serve the residents, natives and traders within
the Amafor axis.
It was located in the
community square behind the popular New and Old Tyre Market, Nkpor.
During the commissioning, ecstatic
traders and residents made merry, dancing to different cultural and local music
as foods and drinks flowed freely.
Commissioning the water project, the
Founder, Ebelechukwu Foundation, Mr. Timothy Ebelechukwu Chukwukelu, from
Akuzor, Nkpor, said that as a village boy brought up before he travelled to
Germany where he presently resides, he had shared in the sufferings of his
people.
“I know where the shoe pinches those
who wear it and having been privileged, I asked myself what can I do to be a
blessing to my people? Whatever I’m doing is a way of sharing the blessings of
God and to say thank you to Him who made it possible. We’ve been to many
places for different projects and each time I come home, I say God, I know you
blessed me and that’s why you are sending me home to do projects. Whatever I do
is to your glory but let me be able to do it in a way that many people will
benefit from it.
“When we do something like a
borehole like this, we have the community as a target as the primary
beneficiaries. When we do educational projects like the one we did in primary
schools, the school pupils benefited and this is just a continuation of the
vision to be a blessing to others,” he said.
Throwing more light on the
activities of the foundation, Ebelechukwu said they have nursery and primary
schools, including skill acquisition centres while the secondary school is at
the verge of completion.
He said the basic healthcare centres
built by the Foundation are also functional with people given medical attention
at almost free.
He disclosed that the foundation has
built 13 boreholes in 13 public schools in Nkpor area while communities like
Ogbunike, Umunya and Mbaise in Imo State, where her sister is married to, have
also benefited.
The Chairman, Amafor Village Union,
Ndubisi Izunwa, in a chat with Oriental News said the commissioning of the
water project was a good omen for the community.
He said water signifies purity and
progress while its importance to life cannot be over emphasized.
He lauded the initiative of the
foundation and promised that they would take full responsibility for the
security of the project.
The former Chairman of the
community, Chief Raphael Obi, described the mood of the people as
unquantifiable happiness.
He said the donor has done noble by
remembering his people in times of his prosperity unlike some that would make
money and use it to foment trouble in their community.
He called on the youths and
influential people in the community to emulate Ebelechukwu instead of engaging
in other acts capable of bringing trouble.
A trader at Nkpor Tire Market,
Romanus Ezeamama, also in a chat said that the water project would benefit both
the traders and their customers.
He said that if individuals could
complement government efforts in providing infrastructure to the people, the
society would have been better than its present state.
Timothy’s younger brother, Barrister
Sam Chukwukelu, also speaking said that making money was not the issue but how
the wealth realized was being utilized.
He challenged the Igbo people to
reorder their priorities so that there would be healthy completion in the
communities and not rivalry and crisis.
Mrs Eugenia Njoku, the immediate
elder sister to Timothy, who doubles as his project executor in Nigeria, while
throwing more light on the borehole project said that the commissioning was
taking place then because the donor was already billed to travel back to his
base.
She said the overhead tank for the
project has been provided while the water would be reticulated to different
parts of the area for maximum use.
She noted that the water was
properly treated and certified okay for consumption and appealed to the people
to use it effectively.
