The state
chairman of the All Progressives Congress Party, APC Hon. Donatus Nwankpa has
described the recent defection of Fred Eke Idika,
former running mate to the
party’s guber candidate, Chief Nyerere Anyim as a good omen for the party in
the state.Idika had last week when the First Lady, Dame Jonathan visited the state decamped from APC to PDP with his supporters at the Umuahia Township Stadium where she was hosted during the PDP Women Presidential Rally in the state.
But contrary to the speculations that his defection was going to wane the strength of the party in the state, Nwankpa in a telephone chat with our reporter said that APC “has just ended up offloading a Jonah in order to allow the ship of the party sail to its destination peacefully”.
According to the state chairman of APC, the party is intact “and I can assure that his exit doesn’t have any negative impact on the party’s structure in the state because we did not ask him to leave. If I tell you that we forced out, we will be lying, but rather we asked him to go and sort things out with security agents. The problem is that he has some issues with the EFCC and we told him to go and sort out some his issues with the EFCC.
“These are some of the issues that our opponents were waiting to ambush us with, but we saw it and asked him to go and sort himself out with the security agencies. So, there is no cause for alarm and we are still committed to our promise of bringing the change that Abians are yarning for and to also deliver dividend of democracy to the people of Abia State.
“He took the honourable way out by using that so that he won’t be an impediment to anyone of us, so we appreciate his sense of reasoning. You know that there are certain things that can be an impediment in your March towards success and progress and that was one of those factors, but to the glory of God on his own, he took that honour”.
Though attempts made to persuade him to disclose the identity of the next running mate to Anyim (guber flag bearer) failed, Nwakpa disclosed that the proposed APC deputy would still come from Abia North where his predecessor comes from, adding that the person is of a good character and “has a name to protect in the state.
According to him, “we are still finalizing things but I can assure you that another running mate is by the corner and will be unveiled at the weekend (Saturday) in our southeast rally coming up in Enugu at the weekend” even as he expressed optimism that new deputy was going to work effectively with the standard party bearer.
He used the opportunity to appeal to all Abians of voting age who has not collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), vote for APC candidates during the March 28 and April 11 elections, assuring that an APC led government at both the national and state level were going to right the wrongs of the PDP led administration in the past 16years.
