UN Lauds Obiano’s administration for being pro-active

The United Nations is expanding areas of collaboration with the State Government.

The Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and Special representative of its secretary-General, Mr. Muhammed Ibin Chambas, who disclosed this when he paid a courtesy call on Governor Willie Obiano at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, said a number of United Nations agencies were working with the state government on the Governor’s visionary interventions and important initiatives. Mr. Chambas said that United Nations is privileged to enjoy special relations with the state and recalled that following the terrorist bombing of the UN building in Abuja, Anambra State, extended generosity to the Organization by offering accommodation to some of the displaced United Nations staff evacuated from the building, noting that Governor Obiano, has sustained the gesture of goodwill and hospitality.

He noted that as a visionary leader, the Governor, mapped out comprehensive pillars of development on which a number of the United Nations agencies were working with him, including Education, Social Development, Economic Programmes, Agriculture, Oil and Gas, as well as Industrialization, among others.
The Head of the United Nations office observed that Anambra State provided a good model for free and credible elections in the last Governorship poll in the state, where all registered  voters who wished to exercise their franchise were able to do so in peace and security and at the end, the choice of the people prevailed.
He expressed the hope that such transparency would be replicated in the coming general elections across the country and commended the efforts of the Independent National Electoral Commission to distribute permanent voters cards, noting that over seventy-seven per cent success had been achieved.
Responding, Governor Obiano said the United Nations was impressed with the effective implementation of its various programmes in the state as his administration, from  inception, put in place necessary measures and structures to promote integrity, transparency and  accountability in the management of donor agencies resources.
He explained that the Organization was also ready to support the state in caring for the mentally challenged persons whom his government had already provided accommodation and welfare.
The Governor assured that the state was working towards widening frontiers of cooperation with the organization.
