Jonathan to reward 164 NYSC members

The Director Gen­eral of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier- General Johnson Olawun­mi, has disclosed that Presi­dent Goodluck Jonathan, will on Monday reward no fewer than 164 Corps members in this year’s President’s NYSC Honours Award inside the Banquet Hall of Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The NYSC DG, who made the disclosure during a press briefing to herald the event said that the 164 winners emerged from the 613 corps members nominated across the country, stressing that distinguished Nigerians with track records of honest and in­tegrity conducted the process.

“Following the gracious ap­proval of Dr Goodluck Jona­than for the next edition of the NYSC Honours Award, the event will take place on Mon­day in the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The honours award ceremony has always been a major event of the scheme since its establish­ment.

“In order to ensure thorough­ness and absolute fairness, the process of selecting this year’s award winners was conducted by some distinguish Nigerians with track records of honesty and integrity. The selection committee after due consid­eration and assessment of re­port on each of the nominees for the combined 2012, 2013 and 2014 edition, selected 164 winners out of 613 nomina­tions received from across the nation,” he noted.

Speaking further, Brig-Gen Olawunmi said: “The crite­ria for selection of the award winners include outstanding performance in all the critical areas of the service year such as; orientation course, primary assignment, community de­velopment service and wind­ing-up/passing-out activities.”

“Assessment of corps mem­bers thus start from the mo­ment they report at the ori­entation camp. Some of the specific areas of assessment include; acceptance of de­ployment to any part of the country, active participation in camp activities, good perfor­mance at primary assignment, as well as initiation and execu­tion of tangible personal com­munity development project, particularly for rural dwellers.

“Other issues also con­sidered for award selection include personal qualities of good character, sense of duty, drive and determina­tion, reliability, initiative and resourcefulness, command and relationship, team work and special contributions,” he noted.
