The
Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-
General Johnson Olawunmi, has disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan,
will on Monday reward no fewer than 164 Corps members in this year’s
President’s NYSC Honours Award inside the Banquet Hall of Presidential Villa,
Abuja.
The
NYSC DG, who made the disclosure during a press briefing to herald the event
said that the 164 winners emerged from the 613 corps members nominated across
the country, stressing that distinguished Nigerians with track records of
honest and integrity conducted the process.
“Following
the gracious approval of Dr Goodluck Jonathan for the next edition of the
NYSC Honours Award, the event will take place on Monday in the Banquet Hall of
the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The honours award ceremony has always been a
major event of the scheme since its establishment.
“In
order to ensure thoroughness and absolute fairness, the process of selecting
this year’s award winners was conducted by some distinguish Nigerians with
track records of honesty and integrity. The selection committee after due
consideration and assessment of report on each of the nominees for the
combined 2012, 2013 and 2014 edition, selected 164 winners out of 613 nominations
received from across the nation,” he noted.
Speaking
further, Brig-Gen Olawunmi said: “The criteria for selection of the award
winners include outstanding performance in all the critical areas of the
service year such as; orientation course, primary assignment, community development
service and winding-up/passing-out activities.”
“Assessment
of corps members thus start from the moment they report at the orientation
camp. Some of the specific areas of assessment include; acceptance of deployment
to any part of the country, active participation in camp activities, good
performance at primary assignment, as well as initiation and execution of
tangible personal community development project, particularly for rural
dwellers.
“Other
issues also considered for award selection include personal qualities of good
character, sense of duty, drive and determination, reliability, initiative and
resourcefulness, command and relationship, team work and special
contributions,” he noted.
