Aggrieved parties have disrupted, hijacked and
destroyed ballot boxes at the Nigeria Labour Congress [NLC] election, bringing
the exercise to an abrupt halt.
According to our reporter, the International
Conference Centre was thrown into frenzy when some delegates lost faith in the
exercise and got violent.
They reportedly seized ballot boxes and smashed them
against each other, destroying them in the process.
The scenario saw delegates, contestants, and observers
running helter-skelter for their lives while the election was still underway.
The Conference, which began Tuesday, was organized to
elect new leaders for the country’s central labour union following the
expiration of tenure of the current executives.
Several unions, including Trade Union Congress [TUC],
Nigerian Textile Workers Union [NTWU], National Union of Electricity Employees
[NUEE], Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria [MHWUN], Nigerian Union of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers [NUPENG], etc. are stakeholders.
It was gathered that, either they each presented a
candidate, or have a preferred candidate.
The battle for the union’s presidency has been
narrowed down to three contenders: General Secretary of NUEE, Comrade Joe
Ajaero, National President of MHWUN, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, and National
President of NUPENG, Igwe Achese.
Comrade Issa Aremu, who was earlier tipped to win the
election, has been allegedly returned unopposed as NLC National Vice President.
It is not clear yet how the event, which had been
peaceful since it began suddenly descended into crisis, but the election for
the President of the Union had created tension among delegates and split them
along partisan lines.
Our reporter said that the police has taken over the
venue and the delegates dispersed, to protect the facility from further damage.
Elombah.com gathered that Labour leaders are presently
convened at the NLC headquarters in the Central Business District of Abuja for
a meeting to resolving the uncanny development.
