It was tears and sorrow at Ezinwafo, Mbaukwu
community in Awka South Local government area yesterday at the scene of a fire
incident that killed four people.
The inferno burnt the victims eighty percent. When www.odogwublog.com associate arrived the
scene of the incident, a crowd of sympathizers was met yelling and crying on
top of their voices.
The people that lost their lives in the inferno
include an elderly woman on a visit to her daughter who recently gave birth, a
small child accompanying the woman on the visit, one other child and the newly
born baby, leaving only the husband and his wife whose chances of survival,
Doctors say are slim.
An eye witness, Mr. Chineye Nzekwe, who hails from
the same community, said the was awoken by loud bangs around two AM, thinking it
was armed robbery attack and gun shots, he rushed out only to discover a male
and a female running and crawling with fire all over them.
He said it took the intervention of people that
rushed out to put off the fire on them. He added that it took the efforts of
the people that came to rescue as well as the Anambra State fire service to
douse the inferno.
Other eye witnesses, Miss Ogechi Nwankwo and Mr
Ifedili Nwankwo described the occurrence as a tragedy, and pleaded with well
meaning individuals and the government to come to the aid of the affected as
they cannot bear the medical cost at all.
In a comment,
Senior Fire Superintendent in the State fire Service, Mr Kingsley Nwokoye,
maintained that they came when things had gotten out of hand but managed to put
off the fire to prevent it from entering another building. Mr Nwokoye said the
fire could have been caused by the presence of inflammable material, judging
from the level of damage. He however disclosed that investigation is still in
process.
At the hospital, Dr. Amaechi Nwachukwu stated that
the husband and wife brought in around Five AM in a critical condition with
eighty percent burns and some inhalation injuries.
He called on the government and well-spirited
individuals in the State to render financial assistance to the couple in other
to offset their huge medical expenses as they had already consumed so much of
the hospital's resources, stressing that they are faced with the challenges of
kidney failure, respiratory failure and infection because of the extent of
burns.#
