For real , the people of Niger Delta
appears to have withdrawn their support for President Jonathan on his bid to
return to the presidency by February, 2015.
The Movement for the Emancipation
of the Niger Delta has said that President Goodluck Jonathan does not deserve a
second term in office.
MEND also expressed its support for
the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu
Buhari (rtd.), adding that its decision was based on the pathetic state of the
nation’s economy.
A statement signed by the
spokesperson of the militant group, Jomo Gbomo, indicated that President
Jonathan had continued to show disregard for those that voted him into power.
It gave instances of how the
President refused to declare his assets against the provisions of the
Constitution, adding that, Jonathan has set up several committees since
assuming office without implementing any of the committee’s report.
“The Movement for the Emancipation
of the Niger Delta, upon careful consideration of the state of the Nation,
endorses and fully supports the Presidential candidate of the All Progressive
Congress, General Mohammadu Buhari.
“Our decision to throw our full
support on General Mohammadu Buhari stems from the pathetic state in which the
country has been put by the government of Goodluck Jonathan and our strong
believe in General Mohammadu Buhari as the man and change the country needs.
“President Goodluck Jonathan does
not deserve a second term in office he has continuously and blatantly
disregarded the very people who voted him into office.
“A President that told Nigerian to
their faces that he does not ‘give a damn’ when asked to declare his assets. A
requirement that is constitutional on assuming the office of the President.
“President Jonathan, since assuming his
office, has setup countless number of Committees; none of which their reports
has ever been implemented. From the Nuhu Ribadu report to the KPMG and Fuel
Subsidy reports, just to mention a few,” the MEND statement issued on Tuesday
read.
The militant group described
President Jonathan’s statement that his administration was planning to fight
corruption as laughable, maintaining that his inability to prosecute any
corrupt government official had shown that he was incapable of tackling
corruption.
“How can Nigerians expect a highly
corrupt person like Goodluck Jonathan to fight corruption when he believes that
“stealing is not corruption,” as he shamelessly told the Nation? He has proven
beyond all reasonable doubt, his inability to tackle corruption or prosecute a
single government official in his six (6) years in office.
“We restate our disregard and
lack of confidence in President Goodluck Jonathan. Rather than address the
perennial issues in the country responsible for his administration’s
failures, he is concentrating government funds in a campaign of misinformation
intended to hoodwink Nigerians, who unfortunately for him, are now wiser
and smarter than he is.
“MEND
commends General Mohammad Buhari for his plans, when elected as President, to
scrap the so-called ‘Office of the First Lady’. This is obviously an
irrelevant, fraudulent and unconstitutional office, whose only purpose is to
further plunder the resources of the country.
