Presenting his paper titled: Education, State and Democracy in Nigeria, at the 3rd Nwafor Orizu memorial lecture, a professor of philosophy and the ASUU zonal Coordinator, Prof. Ike Odimegwu, of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka argued that Nigerian educational system can only be doing well when the issues bordering on Education will been addressed.
"if
Education start doing well, Politics will start doing well. He said that
the future of education in Nigeria is tied to the system of government being
run in the country, adding that democracy remains the best option.
Odimegwu, therefore urged all Nigerians to contribute their quota to
the management of the education sector in other to fulfill the dream
of our past heroes. He was however, optimistic that with the democracy
that is thriving in Nigeria, the future of education is getting
brighter.
“The management of education in Nigeria today, requires all to contribute and change its face to meet the current realities. And I am optimistic that with our striving democracy, which will allow for exploration of opportunities beyond our immediate environment, the future is bright.
The second paper delivered by Barr. Emeka Maduewesi, Esq. Titled: Nwafor Orizu and Horizontal Education. He noted that Dr Orizu practiced what he preached. According to him Dr Orizu knew that the heart of education was the secondary school that made him set up one at his home town before he died. Even as he argued that since he built a secondary school then, he would have built a university by now if he is still alive.
He said, "as we remember him today. I urge the government of Anambra state to pass the necessary legislation converting Nwafor Orizu college of Education to Nwafor Orizu University of Education. Only then can we truly honour him our past Icon.
He further informed that Dr Orizu was an advocate of the "Horizontal" broad of American education as opposed to the narrow "Perpendicular" British system.
