How Gunman attacked Governor Amosun, aides

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, his commissioners and Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) on Tuesday night narrowly escaped death when a member of the state vigilance service, the state-owned security outfit, shot at the governor’s convoy in Agbado, Ifo Local Government Area.

The incident occurred when the convoy which was travelling in company with the vehicles conveying members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on the re-election campaign of the local government, suddenly came under fire.
The Vigilante Service of Ogun State (VSO) operative whose name could not be ascertained as at press time, was in the area as part of the security team for the governor’s visit.
A source at the campaign rally who doesn’t want to be named, said the VSO operative suddenly opened fire on the governor’s convoy “without any visible threat.”
One of the bullets was said to have hit a white Toyota Coaster bus marked Ogun 12 OGGH, conveying the commissioners and SSAs who were few vehicles away from the governor’s car.
The source noted that some of the commissioners who were already fast asleep in the bus when the incident occurred at about 10pm, scampered for safety.
Though none of the members of the state Executive Council on the bus was injured, the Commissioner for Forestry, Alhaji Adebayo Faari, who sat directly at the side where a bullet pierced a hole on the body of the bus, was said to have escaped being hit by the bullet.
Police and Department of State Security (DSS) personnel attached to the governor, immediately dispossessed other VSO men of their weapons. The VSO spokesman, Soji Ganzalo, said members of the security outfit were invited for the rally by the police from Agbado division.
He said the incident occurred when a security officer attached to the governor’s convoy attempted to dispossess a VSO operative at the venue of the rally of his rifle. But Ganzalo’s phone went off as he was trying to explain in details, and further calls put across to him were not answered.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command was not aware of the incident.
