The
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Enugu State, Hon.
Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s electoral fortunes increased at the weekend, as the All
Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) adopted him as its gubernatorial candidate
for the February 28 election.
The
state chairman of APGA , Chief Okechukwu Nkolagu, who disclosed this during a
press briefing at the party’s state secretariat, said it would have been an
effort in futility if APGA fielded any other candidate to run for the
governorship other than Ugwuanyi.
He
said that his party’s choice of Ugwuanyi was predicated on his track record of
performance, adding that APGA was convinced that with the PDP candidate as the
next governor of Enugu State, the future of the people of the state would be
guaranteed and secured.
Nkolagu
stated that APGA was cautious of those emerging as governorship candidates in
the state, disclosing that there was a surge by aspirants who wanted to use the
party platform to contest the governorship election, but they were turned down.
“Rather
we tried to distill for an aspirant that will command the influence of the majority
of the people of the state and one, who would also be capable of enthroning a
better governance in the state.
“I
have the pleasure to inform you that the search was rigorous, but at the end,
the party settled to adopt Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Gburugburu) as its
governorship candidate for the February 28, 2015 gubernatorial election in
Enugu State,” Nkolagu said.
The
APGA chairman noted that the adoption of the PDP candidate was in line with the
national party’s adoption of President Goodluck Jonathan for president.
“We,
therefore, enjoy all our party members, supporters and admirers of APGA in the
state to help, work for and deliver Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the next governor
of Enugu State. We have no doubt in our mind that he will take Enugu State to a
greater prosperity and achieve a secured future for the state,” he said.
He,
however, said APGA would only concede to the PDP the presidential and
governorship slot and urged the people of the state to vote for APGA candidates
in the national and state assembly elections where they have fielded
candidates.
Nkolagu
disclosed that APGA in the state fielded candidates for the three senatorial
seats, five House of Representatives slots and 11 House of Assembly constituencies.
