The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
with a campaign fund of over N21 billion is set to kick off its presidential
campaign tour in preparation for this year’s general election.
President Goodluck Jonathan is
expected to kick off the campaign tour with Lagos as the first stop on
Thursday.
“The president will kick off his
campaign tour on Thursday if all goes well”, a source at the presidency who
declined further details said. The PDP had last year raised over N21 billion to
fund its presidential campaigns for the forthcoming general election.
The campaign fund had raised a lot
of uproar, with the view that it was an abuse of the electoral laws that placed
ceiling on campaign funding.
This had, however, been refuted by a
former minister of information, who was the chairman of the fund raising and
contact committee, Jerry Gana.
He had said using such an amount for
the running of the campaign will be tantamount to breaking the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) law that stipulates a specific amount for
the fund of the presidential campaign.
