Arsenal
leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspurs, and moved into fifth place following their
shock 2-0 win over champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Santi
Cazorla scored the first goal for the Gunners when he put away a 24th minute
penalty following a foul in the box by Vincent Kompany on Nacho Monreal.
The
Champions managed to keep the score at 1-0 in a tepid first half that saw them
make no attempt on Arsenal goal.
Then,
the home side came out with all guns blazing in the second half, but saw their
multiplied efforts rebuffed by an unusually resolute Arsenal defence.
Then,
the Gunners secured closure when Olivier Giroud ran onto a pin-point Cazorla
free kick to score the second with the City defence caught flat footed.
Arsene
Wenger then confirmed the new Arsenal philosophy of ‘holding what you have’, by
sending on Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Flamini for the final 10 minutes, as Man
City threatened.
