More than 150
people died in an attack by suspected Islamists on the northeastern Nigerian
city of Damaturu on Dec. 1, according to a non-governmental organization that
counted bodies at hospital morgues.
Ibrahim Bukar, a
member of the Kano-based Network for Justice, said by phone from Damaturu, that
the number of dead from the Dec. 1 attack had risen above 150.
The insurgents and
the military clashed in the attack on the capital of Yobe State, three days
after bombings and gunmen at a mosque killed more than 100 people in northern
commercial hub of Kano.
The government of
Africa’s biggest economy is struggling to contain a rebellion by the Islamist
group Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates as “Western education is a
sin.”
The militants have
killed more than 13,000 people in the past five years, according to President
Goodluck Jonathan.
On the same day as
the Damaturu attack, a suicide bombing killed five people at a market in
Maiduguri, the capital of neighboring Borno State.
