Controversies continue to trail the
recently held ward congress of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in
Anambra state, as the results of the congress which took place on Tuesday
November 25 and Thursday, November 27, 2014, are yet to be made public.
Sources in Awka, Anambra state,
disclosed that in spite of the fact that that the governor of the state, Chief
Willie Obiano, sent serving Commissioners to act as returning officers to the
congress, the governor appeared not to be satisfied with the outcome of the
congress, which observers say represent the will of the people in the various
wards in the state.
Therefore in an apparent move to subvert
the will of the people in favour of the governor's cronies, the Aguleri born
governor, relocated to his village with the state chairman of APGA, Chief
Kwento, armed with the delegate list, with obvious intention to doctor the list
against certain candidates which include Dubem Obaze, Mike Are, Maja Umeh,
Victor Afam Ogene among several others who are contesting against the
governor's friends.
For instance, in Anambra South
Senatorial District, the Governor Obiano has allegedly instructed that the list
be doctored in favour of Chief Ernest Ndukwe, former boss of the National
Communication Commission (NCC), thereby shutting out Maja Umeh, Mike Are and
others.
While in Anambra North where the
governor hails from, Patrick Obianwu has been penciled down over Dubem Obaze
for the senatorial slot.
Obaze, who was a Commissioner in
Governor Obi's government in Anambra, was also Obiano's director of campaign
before his election.
In Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Obiano
is said to have given instruction the list should be doctored in favour of the
Speaker Anambra state House of Assembly, Princess Chinwe Nwaebili, who is
reported to be 'very close' to the governor, against the representative of
constituency in the House of Representative, Hon. Ogene.
Many also attribute Obiano's interest in
Speaker Nwaebili to the rumours of impeachment threat against him by the
assembly which she is the lead.
In Anambra East/West, Hon Chriscato
Amake is getting the ticket while Tabansi-Okoye is going to have that of
Onitsha.
This obvious subversion of internal
democracy is taking place in Aguleri under the watch of Governor Obiano and the
APGA state chairman, Kwento behind the national chairman of the party, Chief
Victor Umeh, who is in Abuja and even the national official of the party who
were sent to Anambra to supervise the process.
These representatives of the National
Working Committee (NWC) of the party are still holed up in Awka as they are yet
to receive the 'authentic' list of delegates that will vote in the primaries
scheduled to hold on Thursday, December 4, 2014.
The question is, can APGA survive some
of these impositions? Since we understand that most of the candidates they are
positioning are not likely to win election.
