The
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted the claim of the main opposition
party in the country, the All Progressives Party (APC) that PDP has reneged on
its pledge to restrict itself to issues-based campaigns ahead of next year’s
general elections.
National
Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, in a statement yesterday also
faulted the statement of the APC National Publicity Scribe, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
that the description of its presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari
as “semi-literate jack boot” by the PDP National Secretary, Professor Wale
Oladipo, amounted to reneging on its commitment.
Metuh,
in his reaction, submitted that the description of General Buhari as
“semi-literate jackboot was complimentary compared with the many instances of
vicious attacks on the PDP presidential candidate and incumbent President, Jonathan
Goodluck.
“There
has never been any instance that we have maliciously attacked the characters
of those on the presidential ticket of the APC; rather, we have been alive to
our responsibility of offering public service so that Nigerians will not be
deceived. The particular statement by Professor Oladipo, referred to by the
APC, which we even consider as complimentary, does not in any way compare with
the many instances of vicious, malicious and provocative attacks on the person
and office of our presidential candidate, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, after we made
the commitment to engage in a decent campaign,” Metuh said.
He
admonished the APC to walk its talk on commitment to issues-based campaigns,
while citing instances of derogatory remarks on the person of President
Jonathan by certain APC chieftains, including its presidential candidate, General
Buhari.
