Breaking News:Anambra Varsity Goes Bankrupt , Could Not pay Salary for 3 months, Borrows, Owes years of Tax
Agony is the best statement to
qualify the suffering of staffers of the Anambra state University named after
Ojukwu. For two months now running their families have not eaten good food like
the staffers of Paul University, Awka.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Fidelis
Okafor has gone cap in hand begging Governor Willie Obiano to reduce some
unnecessary expenses and give them more subvention as he is suffering much running
the institution empty handed. The University
borrowed over N2.5 Million last year to pay salary and could not pay its taxes
to the state for several years now, reports www.odogwublog.com
exclusively.
www.odogwublog.com
reports that the Vice Chancellor, Anambra State University (now Chukwuemeka
Odumegwu Ojukwu Unuversity), Uli, Prof. Fidelis Okafor has appealed to the
state government to increase its financial support to the university with a
view to addressing their myriads of needs.
Prof. Okafor, who stated this in an
exclusive interview in his office, explained that the ninety million naira
(90,000,000) subvention accruing to the institution from the state government
purse is far cry to paying remunerations of it staffers in the three campuses
which amount to over 230,000,000, excluding miscellaneous expenses per month.
This according to the Vice
Chancellor was among the reason their October and November salaries are yet
unpaid,
Prof. Okafor, while noting that
states like Imo pays 230,000,000 naira subvention to its university despite
that its indigent students enjoy free education, Ebonyi N260,000,000;
Plateau State pays 100% subvention, even as Kogi pays salaries of it staffers
through electronic payment system; lamented that the ANSU’s major source of IGR
and means of paying workers were the students duration fees of N55,000
drawn from N120,000 been paid by each student per session.
He explained out of N120,000
levies the students pay per session, N55,000 is actual duration fees
which goes directly to the institution purse and used for payment of salaries
and miscellaneous expenses such as purchasing of fuels, and other, while
remaining money are for sundry levies such as Student Union Government (SUG),
Laboratories, Identity Cards, to mention a few.
The Academics, who further added the
poor income forced them to obtain loans of 2.5 million naira last year in order
to pay their workers salaries, praised the ex-governor, Chief Peter Obi for
later redeeming the loan, urged his staff to be patient as he was very much
confident that the government of Chief Willie Obiano would soon address the
impasse hampering the university education.
However, the Professor noted that
they have started running diploma programmes on Music and some management
courses in order to raise their Internally Generated Revenue, even as he
implored the visitation panel the state government constituted some months back
to look into the institution’s needs and report back to the government to
intensify its efforts so as to enable the governor take prompt action where
necessary.
On the possibility of relocating the
university from its temporary site at Uli to Igbariam campus, Prof. Okafor
averred that the state legislatures are studying the law establishing the
institution with a view to amending it, hence it lays on the hands of the both
the state executive and legislative arm.
If Obiano does nothing within the remaining weeks , it
means the staffers of the University would go home for Christmas without three
months salary reports www.odogwublog.com.
