’98 % of Internally Displaced Persons Not in Government camp

One of the members of #BringBackOurGirls(BBOG) group, Bukky Sonibare has stated that 98 per cent of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Yola, Adamawa State, are living with families instead of government IDP camps.

Sonibare, who was speaking during the protest organised by the BBOG group after returning from a trip to Yola, stated that the displaced persons were living in abject poverty and dejection, adding that most of them lacked food, shelter and clothing.
“Only 6,500 IDPs are living in government camps, the rest, about 500,000 people, are staying with families in Yola and they are really suffering. We took relief materials to them and they were just crying. They have no clothes, no blankets; some of them sleep on bare ground.
“What happened to the billions raised for the Victim Support Fund? What happened to the Victim Support Fund? They are going through hell. What happened to billions of naira to support the IDPs? About 13 people died between September and December due to cholera. What happened to human feeling?” she lamented.
She added that the group would continue to, not only speak for the return of the abducted Chibok girls, but also on the plight of those who have been affected by the insurgency.
“Even when people are trying stop us, we will continue fight. I want President Goodluck Jonathan to go to Chibok to see the parents of the abducted girls. He should go to IDP camps and tell them things will be better. They all want insurgency to stop so that they will go back to their homes. No amount of food, water or shelter can give them their lives back,” she asserted.
