Traders/Road Users Beat Up Road Safety Officials At Umuokpu-Awka , As Commandant Harps On Safety measures

Criticisms have trailed the activities of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Anambra state.

Road users and traders in Anambras state especially Awka , Onitsha , Ihiala and Nnewi and environs as well as Aguata have condemned their recalcitrant attitudes and infiltration of what they called state roads and local roads harassing road users for fines.
Following this trend some traders at Umuokpu Awka took laws into their hands when the officials caused n accident by their attitude in a one way lane road along Enugu-Onitsha –Awka expressway and beat up the officials.
Odogwublog.com did not ask further questions as the attitude of the traders was not the best giving the situation but the management of the FRSC in Anambra should discipline some of their members who misbehave while on duty.
Traders and the road users at Umuokpu had accused the FRSC of not adhering to its mandate and even blamed them that when accidents happen they would not remove the vehicles on the road quickly endangering road users life but if it was to charge somebody they hastily do.
However, on Thursday FRSC Boss advised motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules to reduce the high incidences of death caused on high ways.
FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, Mr Sunday Ajayi, gave the advice in Awka while briefing newsmen on this year’s Africa Road Safety Day/ World Remembrance Day of Road Crash Victims.
The theme of this year is “Speed kills; Design out Speed.”
The celebration which holds in November every year aims to highlight the scourge of road accidents on African roads and to identify and sympathize with families of road crash victims.
“It is also to remind the public about the dangers of not obeying traffic rules when driving especially on high ways.
“The problem of high way crashes is usually caused by indiscipline on the part of motorists.
“We want people to know that we can do without crashes on high ways if they do what if right by simply obeying traffic rules,” the sector commander added.
He reminded the public that the Commission had the right to arrest and prosecute traffic offenders as well as impound vehicles and give fines to offenders.
“While assuring the motoring public that there would be seamless flow of traffic during the yuletide, we request the public to cooperate with FRSC in ensuring a hitch-free Christmas and New Year celebration,” he said.
Ajayi said that as part of this year’s Africa Safety Day, the state Command would hold a prayer session at the Central Mosque on Friday and a road walk on Saturday in Awka to sensitise the public.
According to him, there would also be a Church service at St. Faith Anglican Church, Awka on Sunday to pray for road crash victims and a continuation of its awareness programmes.
