The political crisis in Onitsha South local government area is not yet over as a new chairman and former Deputy Chairman , Hon. Alex Egbuna Achebe was on Friday sworn-in as a substantive chairman of the council.
His swearing in followed the impeachment of the embattled chairman, Lady Ann Chukwuneke, who, was removed by twelve out of the seventeen councilors in the council.
The panel instituted by the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Peter Umeadi to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the former council chairman, Lady Ann Chukwuneke has submitted its report alleging that Chukwuneke never appeared before it.
And odogwublog.com reports that it was sequel to the refusal of the impeached Executive chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra state Lady Ann C Chukwuneke to appear before the panel setup to investigate the allegation leveled against her over gross misconduct within a stipulated time frame the legislative arm of the council late hours of Friday sustained her impeachment and sworn in the deputy Hon Alex Egbuna Achebe.
Unanimously voting for the immediate swearing-in of the Deputy Chairman as stipulated by law after reading out the panel’s report by the Deputy Clerk of the House, the leader, Hon. Emeka Akanegbu posited that it was necessary to follow the dictates of the law to swear-in a new chairman in which a motion was moved to that effect by Hon. Lawson Ikeakor and supported by Hon. Onyebuchi Obi representing Odoakpu Ward 4.
It was at this juncture that the Leader, Hon. Emeka Akanegbu ordered for the swearing-in of the Deputy Chairman, Hon. Egbuna Achebe as the new council chairman after twelve councilors unanimously adopted the report of the investigation panel where the former chairman was allegedly found guilty of all allegations leveled against her.
The clerk of the legislative council, Mr. Clement Chigbata later swore-in the new chairman who was ushered into the chamber at about 3:30pm.
After the day’s deliberation the councilors all left in an official white Mitsubishi Bus with the inscription “Onitsha South Legislative Council” with a team of stern looking Police men to an unknown destination.
Staff of the council who were dumb-founded at the outcome of the deliberation all stayed in their offices watching through the windows as stern looking policemen patrolled the council headquarters.
Odogwublog.com informs that the impeached Chairman Lady Chukwuneke had earlier on 20 November 2014 got a court injunction from the Federal High court at Awka restraining impeachment process and as well restraining any other person from parading him or herself as a new Chairman of the council. He lamented the former chairman decided to invade their market like a warrior in company of notorious thugs to unleash mayhem on the innocent traders.
