Butchers Cautioned In Anambra Over spread of disease


The Anambra East Local Government Chairman Hon. Hillary O. Udanoh has cautioned the United Butchers Multipurpose Co-operative Society over slaughtering of uninspected animals for human consumption in the local government area to avoid spread of animal disease.


www.odogwublog.com reports that Udanoh gave the warning during the inauguration of the refurbished slaughter slab in Anambra East. He said that it is dangerous for the butchers to either secretly or publicly slaughter animals for the people to buy and consume without subjecting the animals for proper inspection emphasizing that such act portends danger to human health.

He pointed out that the council has enough qualified animal inspection personnel and other qualified officials in the health and environmental unit thus, should not prevent them from carrying out their official duties at any time. 
He warned that any act capable of restraining the health personnel from performing their official duties at the slaughter slab will not be taken lightly because according to him, animals slaughtered without proper scrutiny by the authorities concerned could endanger the health of the consumers, advising them to provide wholesome meat to the consumers as this according to him could prevent health hazard to the local population.
The Chairman who reiterated the commitment of his administration toward the welfare of the people of the area, promised to give the necessary support to the union.
In his address, the Chairman of the union Chief Mike Enemuo stated that the group is comprised of committed members united by a common goal of providing good meat to the consumers devoid of poor handling stressing that their basic objective is to provide disease-free and hygienically processed meat to the people as well as maintaining the integrity of the environment.
He maintained that the union will stick to environmental consciousness through proper disposal of solid and liquid waste, slaughtering of only healthy animals, encouragement of proper animal inspection among other rules and regulation guiding them.
He pointed out the new slaughter house will provide direct and indirect employment to scores of people in the area, generating revenue for the Local Government through the payment of slaughter fee and meat inspection fee.
Chief Enemuo also appealed to the Anambra East Local Government to assist the union create access road to the slaughter house, provide toilet facilities and provision of bore hole with overhead tank, this he noted will go along way in giving a good face lift to the slaughter house.
Dignitaries at the event were the council deputy Chairman Hon. Ikee  Ochie represented by Mr. Onuorah Oguejiofor, secretary to Anambra East Local Government (SLG) Hon. Mike Okoye, Hon. Supervisor, Councilors among others.
