Nigerian Immigration Service,
Katsina State Command, has arrested 10 suspected victims of human traffickers
and two members of the syndicate at Kongolam border in the state.
The state Immigration Controller,
Mr. Emmanu Ogbuomo, disclosed this while parading the suspects at the command
headquarters in Katsina.
According to him, the suspected
victims from Delta, Edo and Ogun States respectively were nabbed by the command
patrol team at Nigeria-Niger Republic border before they could escape to the
neighbouring country.
The state Controller revealed that
only two of the suspects were in possession of valid travel documents, adding
that the suspected trafficker, Mohammed Usman Anka, 36, a professional driver
resident in Gome State, was to transport the victims aged between 24 to 45
years to Damagram in Niger Republic.
Another member of the syndicate, simply
identified as Mr. Kefas, was to take them from there to Agadez, through Sahara
Desert, for their hazardous journey to Europe.
Mr. Ogbuomo said the arrested
trafficker, Anka, who was also the driver of the ill-fated bus; his conductor,
Falalu Adamu, the vehicle and the victims would be handed over to National
Agency for the Prohibition in Trafficking in Persons and other crimes (NAPTIP)
for necessary action.
He also stressed the determination
of the command towards fighting all forms of trafficking and activities of
illegal migrants.
