He noted
that the distribution exercise would commence in all the Local Government
distribution centres in the state simultaneously and re-stated the commitment
of his administration to support the Roll Back Malaria partners in ensuring
that malaria scourge is eliminated in the State. He urged citizens to ensure
that they sleep under the net rather than hanging it on the doors and windows.
“We want everybody to be healthy and the net is for everybody irrespective of party affiliation, religion or background” he said.
The field Representative of the Roll Back Malaria Partners, Dr. Folanke Olayinka regretted that many beneficiaries do not sleep under the net, arguing that malaria accounts for an estimated 25 percent deaths in the under five and 30 percent childhood deaths in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike observed that over 95 percent of Anambrarians are at high risk of the infection of malaria.
The commissioner also informed that two people would be entitled to one net which he said, has life span of four years, pointing out that the most vulnerable in the malaria epidemics are the pregnant women and children under 5 who he said, had fragile immune system.
Highpoint of the event include the investiture of the wife of the Anambra state Governor, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano as the Net Ambassador for Anambra state LLINs replacement campaign by the National coordinator, national malaria elimination programme, Abuja.
