The Senator representing
Anambra Central Senatorial, Dr Chris Nwabueze Ngige has spoken against the
decision of the National Assembly to recommend the autonomy of the local governments,
insisting that local governments are local affairs that ought to be under the
states.
The former governor
of Anambra State who is currently sponsoring the Power Reform Bill and the
Supreme Court Expansion Bill ssembly, his was a minority view.
This is coming as Students
of Polytechnics attacked Senator Chris Ngige for what they described as an
inimical action to sabotage the efforts of the National Assembly to abolish and
prohibit dichotomy and discrimination between first degree and HND in the National
Assembly. More on this later.
Ngige was however quick to
point out that the local government autonomy should be enforced at the level Of
the state assemblies ensure that the people should the governments they deserve
at the local level.
The view of Senator Ngige
tallies with the unanimous position of all governors in the country, which may
upturn the resolution at the level of the states.
For any item to be amended
in the constitution, it must be endorsed by the resolution of 24 Houses of
Assembly, in addition to that of the two chambers of the National Assembly.
The ex-governor of Anambra
State spoke on an NTA Network programme this morning.
Illustrating with ‘Anambra
State which has 21 local governments only ‘and Bayelsa State which has eight,
Ngige noted that it would be the duty of states to readjust and create he
adequate number of local governments that would serve their administrative
need, noting that the existing ones were created by military fiat and ought not
to be an instrument to bypass the states which are the federating units.
