Two councillors from Awgu Local
Government Area of Enugu State and a lawyer, who were arraigned before a
Magistrate Court in Enugu West Senatorial District, were remanded in prison
custody on Wednesday.
The trio of Okeke Izunna, Okolo Olisa Solomon and Raymond
Inyimba, who were said to be sympathetic to the aspirations of the Deputy
Senate President, Chief Ekweremadu, were dragged before an Awgu Magistrate
Court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing. The
councillors were among the six, who sat last Tuesday to begin impeachment
proceedings against the council Chairman, Mr. Mathanus Nze, a strong supporter
of Governor Sullivan Chime. The prosecutor, a police Inspector, Cletus Ogiri,
told the court that the accused persons had on October 28, conspired and broke
into the Awgu legislative House, where they removed the mace, the symbol of
authority, without the consent of the House leader. The prosecutor further
alleged that the three accused persons stole the mace valued at N2 million. The
accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, while their
counsel, Cletus Agu, in his submission, prayed the court to grant them bail.
But the prosecuting police officer opposed the bail, saying the police were
still investigating the matter. However, the trial Magistrate, Mr. S. O.
Chukwuani, ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody till
November 7, when the case would be heard.
