Three people were killed and several
seriously injured when a vehicle sped through a red light and rammed into a
group of cars waiting at the light, causing an 11-vehicle crash in Oak Lawn
this afternoon, authorities said.
The crash about 4:30 p.m. at Cicero
Avenue and 95th Street killed three and injured 11, two of whom were
hospitalized in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak
Lawn, according to Oak Lawn police. Names of those killed were not being
released, pending notification of their families.
Witnesses told police that the crash
happened when a vehicle headed west on 95th Street at high speed went through a
red light at Cicero Avenue, crossed over into the eastbound lanes, and hit
several vehicles that had been waiting for the light to change to go east,
according to a news release.
In addition to the three people dead
on the scene and the two with critical injuries, another person was
hospitalized with non-critical injuries, and eight other people were treated
for minor injuries, police said.
The Oak Lawn police Accident
Reconstruction Unit was investigating the crash, according to the release.
