The governorship race in Cross River State is becoming
more interesting with more aspirants declaring their intention to succeed
Governor Liyel Imoke.
Among the aspirants are former
members of the State Executive Council who resigned their appointments about
two weeks ago.
The latest in the pack of aspirants
is a Calabar-based legal practitioner, Mr. Joe Agi, SAN, who has decided to
dump his wig and gown to test the murky waters of politics.
Mr. Agi told journalists in Calabar
after publicly declaring his intention to vie for the governorship ticket of
the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP that he was in the race to make a difference.
He said, after taking a cursory look
at the performance of successive administrations in the state, he decided to
join the race.
Agi disclosed that his entry into
the governorship race was moved by the desire to offer quality service to the
people.
Also in the race is a Catholic
Priest, Rev. Father Agantem Eworo who is also vying for the PDP ticket.
The priest’s entry into the race
took most Catholic faithful by surprise as majority of the aspirants in the
race are Catholics.
Though most politicians are said not
to see Father Eworo as a threat, his popularity especially among Catholics in
the state may be an advantage to his ambition.
