For apparently
engaging in what it described as sabotage to the age-long traditional identity
and culture of Okigwe people, a group known as the Okigwe Advancement Forum,
has advised the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lady Nma Love Onyechere,
to as a matter of necessity, tender an unreserved public apology to the wife of
the state Governor, Mrs Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha and the entire women of Okigwe
local government area.
Lady Nma
Onyechere, it was reported had allegedly facilitated the hiring of women dance
troupe from Amasiri-Afikpo of Ebonyi state, in stout defiance to the original
female cultural dance of the people of Okigwe area, to perform at this year’s
August meeting which attracted guests at the event.
However, irked by
the unpalatable conduct of the female Commissioner, the women it was also
reported angrily beseeched the Palace of the chairman, Okigwe council of
traditional rulers, HRM Eze Ugochukwu, where they interrupted the council
meeting to petition the Commissioner.
Reacting to the
development, the Okigwe Advancement Forum through its chairman, Chief Isaac
Uchendu, cautioned Nma Onyechere, against flagrant disregard of the age-long
cultural values of Okigwe people and urged her to further refrain from such act
which he said, could pitch her against the custodians of the people’s culture.
He asserted that
it was in the interest of the female commissioner to apologize to the
Governor’s wife for deliberately deceiving her into believing that the women
who performed at the August meeting event were Okigwe women, as well as the
Okigwe women in general for the insult meted out to them.
According to him,
the public apology became necessary because if it were in the advanced
countries, such grievous offence bothering on sheer deceit would have been
accompanied with outright resignation, as the commissioner had eroded the
confidence reposed in her by the people of the state, especially, the
governor’s wife and the female folk which she is expected to protect at all
times.
