The remains of Lady Maria Nwatah, the mother of the member representing Awka North Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly and House Committee chairman on Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Rebecca Udorji was weekend, interred in her country home, Umunagu Village Achalla in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State reports Odogwu Media.



The deceased who aged 64 was committed to mother earth at exactly 12: 52 pm amidst tears. Her three children, Mrs Nonyelu Orauno, Hon Rebecca Udorji and her only son, Mr. Obiorah Nwatah wept mournfully at the grave side as the golden casket bearing their mother’s remains was being lowered to the grave.


Odogwu Media reports that despite the heavy down pour that lasted for over an hour, the burial ceremony witnessed large turnout of sympathizers within and beyond Anambra State including the wife of the State Governor, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Victoria Chikwelu, Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Chinwe Nwaebili and over 15 State lawmakers, former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Mr Emeka Sibeudu,  PDP Chieftains, Chief Chris Uba,  Emma Nweke, Senator Annie Okonkwo, members of the State Executive Council including Commissioners for Agriculture, Chief Nnamdi Meko and his Environment counterpart, Chief  Everestus Uba.

Others include traditional rulers of Ugbenu, HRH Igwe Lawrence Egwuonwu and his Ebenebe counterpart, Igwe Christopher Nnaegbuna as well as party aspirants, Sylvester Okonkwo, Hon. Emmanuel Uchieze former member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency and Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, the CEO/MD of Odogwu Media publishers of online newspaper and blog odogwuemekaodogwu.com and odogwuemekaodogwu.blogspot.com as well as The Cornucopia Reporters among others.

Despite that Obiano's wife Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme) was represented, the next day she came in her glory with her full entourage after which the state Governor , Chief Willie Obiano and former Governors , Mr Peter Obi , Senator Chris Ngige , Deputy Governor , Nkem Okeke, other political officer holders and local government chairmen as well as former political leaders like Former Deputy Speaker Kelue Molokwu, former speaker Anayo Nnebe, Chief Austin Ndigwe and PDP leadership in the state and local government areas were all in attendance at the burial. 

Before her death, Late Lady Maria Nwatah was a devoted Christian who dedicated most of her life to the service of God and humanity and converted many souls to Christ. She was the leader of so many groups, including Catholic Women’s Organisation both home and abroad in Achalla, her home parish and Onitsha branch.

Late Maria was born on the 10th day of November 1950 to the family of late Ogbuefi Igboanugo Ezioba and late Mrs Abgomma Ezioba of Amukabia village Achalla. She got married to late sir Patrick Nwatta in 1966 at Sacred Heart Parish Odoakpu Onitsha and their marriage was blessed with 3 children. Madam Maria passed on, on August 17, 2014 as she went to bed without waking alive.
The lawmaker, Hon Rebecca Udorji described her mother as a peaceful woman who lived her life for others, promising to imbibe her mother’s life prayer and peaceful co-existence among the people.

“As we mourn the exit of my beloved mother, I will learn and grow on the lessons she clearly lay down for us during her sojourn on earth which include: industrious, persistence, strong in prayer, peaceful co-existence, tolerance and generosity. She was a pillar of strength even till death” she said.

The wife of the Anambra state Governor, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano commensurate with Lady Maria’s family for the demise of their mother and described the deceased as “a virtuous, peaceful and kind-hearted woman of substance and dignity who lived a life worthy of emulation”
Anambra Speaker, Princess Chinwe Nwaebili consoled their member, Hon Rebecca Udorji and the entire Nwatah family for the demise of their mother and urged them to uphold the virtues and integrity of their mother.
“Your mother was distinguished for her simplicity, humility, pragmatism, amiability and commitment in any endeavour she undertakes and this should be a source of consolation to you”
A PDP chieftain, Chief Chris Uba who led over 200 PDP supporters to the burial, prayed God to give Hon. Udorji and his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
Chief Uba and his supporters were not deterred by the heavy down pour at the venue but danced fervently under the rain as a solidarity to his party loyalist, Hon Rebecca Udorji.
In his homily earlier at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Achalla, the homilist Rev. Fr. Columba Okani urged Christians to be prepared at all times for death as it could come any time in life. He regretted that people die young these days suggesting that living a life worthy of emulation as the only way out to make heaven.
