Abia Gov.'s wife distributing items to widows
Widow of the former member representing Aba South constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Nwogu Iheasimuo, has been elected to replace her late husband in the House. She is Mrs. Nkemdirim Nwogu Iheasimuo.
The late Iheasimuo died last February. When INEC announced the timetable for the conduct of the bye-election for his replacement, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under which platform he won, chose his widow as his replacement.
In the election described by many as a walkover for the PDP, Mrs. Iheasimuo beat her closest rival and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Elder Smart Ebere, with a wide margin of 1, 655 votes to 313.
The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chimaobi Akwara, came a distant third with 252 votes. Dr. Mgborie Obasi, who announced the result, gave the breakdown as follows; total number of registered voters in the constituency is 122, 900, while 2, 772 were accredited by INEC for the election. The total valid votes were 2, 220, rejected votes 36, total votes cast were 2, 256.
The election was seen by many as a foretaste of the 2015 election in the area and the reason all the candidates jostling for political offices in the state are bent on realizing it in PDP. Governor Theodore Orji, while congratulating the winner, said her emergence was victory for democracy. He also commended the security agencies, the electoral commission and the electorate for the peaceful conduct of the election.
This is coming as APC members were crying as following a failed prediction by a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Okey Nwagbara who had predicted victory for the party in the last Saturday bye-election holding in Aba State constituency.
Nwagbara
who spoke in full confidence to journalists in Aba, the commercial nerve of
Abia State about his party's victory ahead of the election said that they were
going to repeat the Osun feat in Saturday election.
To
further reaffirm the determination of the party to give the ruling Peoples
Democratic Party a run for their money in 2015 election the APC stakeholder who
is also the Vice Chairman of the APC for Abia Central zone advised PDP to start
preparing their handover note as they were not going to stay in power beyond
2015.
He said that the people of the area deserved
nothing short of an individual that has the interest of the people at heart,
adding that a vote for the APC candidate, Elder Smart Ebere he described as a
grassroot person and one with the political pedigree to protect the interest of
the people and deliver more dividend of democracy in the area.He posited that a vote for APC candidate in the election will ensure that the ruling party will have a means of being checkmated, stressing that the voice of opposition party (ies) helps to strengthen democratic processes.
He added “Rubber stamped candidature in Nigerian politics today has sent so many people to where they are not destined to be. If they can use their conscience to decide their destiny on Saturday, they will see a very big drastic change.”
“When Late Samuel Mbakwe, former Imo State Governor was in power, he was in the opposition party (NPP), while the ruling party is (NPN) but because of his stiff opposition to some policies of the ruling party, he made the whole world know with his tears that forced the then president Shehu Shagari to visited Ndiegoro and after seeing the situation of Ndiegoro did something to address the situation then.
“By the time they failed to exercise their franchise and give their mandate to an opposition aspirant, they will remain worse than they have been. What they deserve is an opposition voice in the State House of Assembly that will let the whole world know their condition and that could bring a drastic change and make their conditions better.”
The APC
chieftain who boasted that the party’s candidate was the most suitable for the
seat, alleged that plans to allow trade and economic activities to be on in
various markets in the local government while the election was been conducted
is a clear indication that the ruling party had rigged the election which he
said cannot work.
But after the noise , PDP won
landslide .
