The list of seven new Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) to work with the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba have been released today with an Igbo man currently the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Opara from Imo State reports odogwuemekaodogwu.com.
The other DIGs, are six former Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (IGP) including, Solomon E. Arase (Edo State, South-South); Kawe Christopher Katso (Taraba, North-West); Dan’azumi Jos Doma (Niger State, North-Central);.
Also in the list are Mamman Ibrahim Tsafe (Zamfara State, North-West); Saliu Argungu Hashimu (Kebbi State, North-West); and David O. Omojola (Ekiti State, South-West).
Opara got double promotion to enable him qualify to join the Police Management Team, as he is the most senior police officer from the South-East and the law requires that every geo-political zone must be represented in the police management.
Sotonye L. Wakama, from Rivers State in the South-South, was also promoted from the rank of Commissioner of Police to DIG. It is not immediately clear why this was done since the South-South already had an AIG (Arase) moved up.
Assistant Director of Press and Public Relations of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Ferdinand U. Ekpe, said in a statement in Abuja: “The promotions are with effect from August, 19, 2014. The Commission also re-affirmed its earlier decision that promotions from the ranks of ACPs to AIGs would only be done after its interviews with the affected officers.”
Ekpe added: “The Honourable Chairman of the Commission, Sir Mike Mbama Okiro, while congratulating the newly promoted officers, enjoined them to see their elevation as opportunity to serve, imploring them to use their wealth of experience in uplifting the Nigeria Police Force.”
