odogwuemekaodogwu.blogspot.com reports that the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC)
has revealed that it recorded 65 road crashes, which 29 of them were fatal,
within the month of June in Anambra, Delta and Edo.
odogwuemekaodogwu.blogspot.com informs further that Mr Charles Akpabio, Zonal Commanding
Officer of FRSC in-charge of Anambra, Delta and Edo, told newsmen this on in
Onitsha, Anambra that the record showed a reduction of crashes in the zone by
15 per cent.
Akpabio said that the reduction
would be attributed to the Specail Intervention Patrol of the zone as well as
an elaborate enlightenment and media campaign against over speeding and bad
tyres.
``The three states in the month of
June collectively carried out intensive patrol operations in all the routes in
the states and by our analysis 70,650 kilometre was covered by various patrol
teams in the three states earlier mentioned.
``And the combined patrol teams in
the three states arrested 5,135 traffic offenders that is drivers,
motorcyclists that disobey one traffic rules or the other; for committing 5,708
traffic offences for the month of June alone.
``And also, we carried out mobile
courts, Edo, Delta and Anambra; 806 traffic offenders out of the 5, 135
offenders were prosecuted, arraigned before the mobile courts; 725 of those
arraigned were convicted and 12 were discharged and quitted.
``And in so doing, we recorded in
the course of our monitoring and operations in the three states we recorded 65
road traffic crashes that occurred in the zone; 29 of such were fatal crashes.
``And we are working towards making
sure that this is reduced.
``But to enlighten the public the
more we had 39 regular television programmes; 88 radio programmes; 65
domesticated public enlightenment in various churches, mosques and communities,’’
he said.
The zonal commander lauded donor
agencies and various state governments for supporting the FRSC in meeting its
mandate to ensure safety of all on the road.
On the
ongoing Special Intervention Patrol (SIP) of the zone on the Onitsha-Oba-Ekwusigo-Ihiala-Mgbidi
axis of Onitsha-Owerri road, Akpabio noted that it would be a success since it
had received support from Anambra government and the FRSC headquarters.
