reports that the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship Most Rev. Dr.
Paulinus Ezeokafor, has called for a quick resolution of the strike action
embarked by Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) six weeks ago.
Bishop Ezeokafor who
made the call at St. Maria Gorreti Catholic Church, Umuona, Aguata L. G. A.
while reacting to the Ebola virus scare which was recorded in the country last
week said it was now important that the striking doctors returned to work so as
to be able to contain the possible epidemic that could result from the disease
while urging the government to dialogue with them and find a common ground to
end the impasse.
The Catholic prelate,
enjoined Nigerians to turn to God as he described the virus as deadly, very
infectious and fast killer, pointing out that detecting it in
Nigeria may not be fast and easy as it was in advanced countries,
‘Every profession has
its ethics and for the doctors I know it is life first, if you strike by not
treating people they will die, I appeal to the doctors and the government to
resolve this crisis so that they can continue to save life.
‘In as much as I expect
the government to do their best, I want the doctors to treat people and not
allow them to die because they are on strike, there is no enough excuse to give
when someone whom you could help dies, in the interest of the masses let them
go back to work”, he said.
Meanwhile, the Bishop
has announced that 10th of August would be the date for the
beginning of Family Week in the Church’s calendar across the world and
highlighted the importance of the family as a unit that guaranteed good
society.
He said it was in that
philosophy that the church celebrates the family Week, to remind the people the
need to keep the family together in our quest for a peaceful society.
‘Everything about life
and society depends on the family so by the 10th of August the
Church will draw its attention to the importance of the family.
‘Nigeria must get the
family unit which the Vatican calls the domestic church, right in our bid to
build society we want to see.’ Bishop Ezeokafor said.
