informs that an attempt to unseat the present leadership of Onitsha Drug
Market, known as Onitsha Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers Union (OPPMDU)
located along Onitsha/Asaba Expressway has hit the rocks .
Some traders led by one Mr. Uche Ubah, Chairman of “Tablet line” who was said
to be aspiring for the chairmanship position of the central market was reliably
gathered to have led a group of traders mainly from the market Evangelism
Committee to an illegal meeting where issues allegedly relating on how to cause
crisis in the market was to be discussed in a bid to achieve his ambition.
According to a market source, trouble started when a group of traders who were
among the members of the Evangelism Committee said to be against Mr. Ubah’s ambition
rose against the agitation of the ambitious trader.
The source told reporters that the incident which generated a lot of tension
among the group, however, degenerated and the meeting came to an abrupt end as
they engaged one another in a free for all fight.
Reacting to the allegation that he masterminded the crisis, the market
chairman, Hon. Nwosu Ugochukwu observed that the attempt to unseat him by
Mr. Ubah and his cohorts has boomeranged as the they never found anything positive
in his interim leadership .
According to Hon .Ugochukwu whose caretaker committee was appointed by the
Anambra State Government pending the time an election would be conducted
in the market.
He claimed that the action of his detractors who had for long defied government
directives to halt further moves for election had converted their group as de
facto leaders of the drug market, adding that the allegation that five persons
were injured was false as nobody sustained any form of injury in the purported
fracas.
When this reporter visited the market active business was going on as there was
no report of any major incident in the controversial drug
market.
