World Bank To Invest 50M Dollars (N80 Billion) In Anambra For Development


                  
 The World Bank is poised to invest N50million Us dollars in Anambra State which is about N80billion as a support to the government, in accelerating development in the state.

The money, when released,  will be used to revamp all technical colleges and vocational studies in the state.

The World Bank Senior Education Specialist, Dr Tunde Adekola made the disclosure at Government Technical College Onitsha while inspecting some dilapidated structures and some machines in the school.



He further revealed that World bank has mapped out N150million dollars for three states in Nigeria..

While fielding questions from newsmen, Dr.Adekola explained that the essence of the visit is to “see the things that government has been doing on its own and to know the area of intervention in terms of support to the government, revealing that Anambra is one of the states along side with Ekiti and Bauchi that will  benefit from the world bank  project.

“The total budget for Nigeria is about N150m dollars and part of the money will be used for technical and vocational studies” he said.

Dr. Adekola expressed gratitude to the students of GCT, Onitsha who boldly defended all technical questions put across to them by the World Bank team adding that the children has to develop the concept that will transcend to practical terms.
“We have seen a lot of innovations here and despite their constraints, the children are still trying to do something. At least, we have seen children who cannot mould block and renovate houses but they can now mould block among other things.

“This is the kind of thing we want and we are now poised to support all technical and vocational schools in Anambra State” he said.

While conducting the World Bank team and government officials round the facilities in the school premises, the principal of the school, Barr. Victor Iwuno rolled out some challenges constraining the college to include inter allia: under staffing, erosion menace and infrastructure.

According to him, “We have these basic machines but we don’t have staff to man them and because we don’t have regular power supply here, some of the machines cannot be put into work” he snapped.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha stated that the World Bank capacity building is result based, stating that Chief Willie Obiano’s administration is aimed at giving education leverage as encapsulated in the 2014 budget.

According the Commissioner, the team is going round the eleven technical schools in the state to see what is on ground and what will be done to support technical colleges.

“Technical college is important to us because they create linkages for our children here and abroad” she submitted, expressing satisfaction that the N10m released to the college last year was put into proper use.
Two students of the school, Mattew Okereke and Chukwudi Ononiwu admitted that they can produce bolts, screws, and spanner but urged the government and world bank to assist in repairing some of their delapidated drilling, cat, and milling machines which they said, are now rusted due to inconsistent power supply.
