A PRESS
STATEMENT BY NDIGBO UNITY FORUM (NUF)
STOP THE HIKE IN
THE ELECTRICITY BILLS IN SOUTH EAST
Despite
the poor electricity supply in the country, new owners of the privatized power
holding company of Nigeria (PHCN) have not deemed it fit to regulate the
outrageous bill usually imposed on its helpless customer. Having seen that the
scenario is not likely to change unless actions are taking by relevant authorities, Ndigbo Unity Forum an
Igbo Social cultural Organization decide
to use this medium to appeal to the government and other regulatory body to
look into this matter and ensure that this unjustified exploitation of the
people of the south East by the owners of the privatized power holding company
is stop.
Nigerians,
not withstanding the skepticism, tried their best by embracing the
privatization of PHCN with the hope that it signal the end of epileptic power supply in the country,
unfortunately the doubters of this whole process of privatization of power has
been proved right no thanks to the continuous epileptic power supply and
outrageous bill. This ugly trend
especially in the east is champion by Enugu Electricity Distribution Company
(EEDC).
In
order to put an end to this ugly trend, Ndigbo Unity Forum is making the
following demands:
1. We call on federal government and other
regulatory bodies to mandate Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to
distribute prepaid meter to all its consumers in the South East especially
Onitsha, Abakiliki, Okigwe, Nsukka, Owerri, Aba, Umuahia, Orlu, Nnewi, Awka,
Oji River, Afikpo and Arochukwu
2. Government
should monitor closely the activities of the private owners closely and ensure
that this outrageous imposing of ridiculous bill on helpless citizens is stop.
3. We urged
President Goodluck Jonathan to interfere and resolve the issues that has been
delaying Geometric power from providing power to Aba city: A city of more than
one million people which is also one of the industrial hub of Nigeria
4. We
called on the Dr Sam Amadi, led Nigeria Electrical Regulatory Commission to
remove the N750 fixed charge since the payment cannot be justify.
5. The
Federal Government should withdraw the license Enugu Electricity Distribution
Company if the company fall to regulate
the outrageous bills it impose on the people of south east and hand it over for
a more considerate and competent cooperate bodies.
