The FCT
Administration has sealed up a total of 2,491 facilities and sites in the
Federal Capital Territory between January and April 2014 for non-compliance
with Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit Regulations.
The
FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, who said this at a meeting
with some senior officials of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board in
his office on Saturday, noted that some of the facilities were also sealed up
for defaulting in payment of service charges and other environmental offenses, odogwuemekaodogwu.com reports.
Mohammed
stated that a new FCT Policy Guideline on Solid Waste Management is being
packaged and stakeholders would soon be invited to brainstorm on its review,
preparatory to its approval by the FCT Executive Committee.
The
Minister explained that the FCT Resident Sanitation Forum has been
resuscitated with the objectives of increasing general awareness and ensuring
full participation of the residents in environmental protection programmes.
According
to him, 3,195 premises were inspected and given health talk on the importance
of sanitation, while 93 others were fumigated in the process.
Mohammed
warned that hard times await environmental offenders in the Federal Capital
Territory, as all efforts would be put in to rid Abuja of all
environmental nuisances.
“I
wish to solicit for the cooperation and understanding of all residents of the
Territory as well as closer collaboration of all stakeholders to keep Abuja
clean and rid it of all environmental nuisances,” he stated.
