odogwuemekaodogwu.com reports that emotion flowed like river as school children across Anambra state remembered the abducted school girls in Chibok in Borno state and those killed in Soweto protest in South Africa.
Speaking during this year's Day of African Child held at Irene Menakaya school, Onitsha, the Anambra state Commissioner for Education, Prof Kate Omenugha described the celebration as pivotal to Nigerian children especially in the face of glaring child abuse across the world.
Prof Omenugha in her paper titled "Child friendly education for Igbo child" opined that child education has become a global issue in the world, adding that the aim was to inculcate in the children the ability to harness their talents and bring their ingenuity to bear in the development of the society.
She called on schools to operate in the interest of the child, adding "they should be designed and run in such a way that ensures that all children, irrespective of gender, class or social status and ability, can learn in a safe, healthy, secure, stimulating and protected environment"
Earlier in his address, the Founder/President Igbo Ga-Adi Foundation, Mr. Ikechukwu Okafor said the celebration was to remember children all over the world and dissect their challenges as well remember children killed in Soweto, South Africa during 1976 protest.
Mr. Okafor disclosed that it was also organized to pray for abducted Chibok school girls as well to recognize and reward outstanding school children who excelled in Igbo language competition organized by Igbo ga-adi foundation.
He said the theme of this year’s Day
of African child which is “A child Friendly, Quality, Free and Compulsory
Education” was apt now the entire country is clamoring for better education for
the Nigerian children to alleviate the suffering of the poor children.
The Executive Director of Irene
Menakaya schools, Mrs. Christy Chukwukelu in her address also enumerated the
problems facing the African children which she said was initially centred on
ignorance on the side of the parents.
She commended the Igbo Ga-Adi
foundation and UNESCO for partnering with the school to educate the children
and their parents on the way forward towards actualizing the goals of giving
the children the best they deserve.
