At 9th Mile Enugu last Sunday, a policeman stopped
the vehicle i was travelling in. It belonged to Transport Corporation of
Anambra State (TRACAS).
First, he asked the driver for the tinted glass
permit. It was produced. He asked for DL. The driver gave him a temporary DL
issued by FRSC. He held it back and demanded for a covering letter on FRSC
letter headed paper authorizing him to use a temporary DL.
The driver
was lost. Offence No.1.Then, he asked for the vehicle particulars. Driver explained that vehicle belonged to TRACAS and
drivers are not given vehicle documents. Police accused him of driving a stolen
vehicle.
The team leader
confiscated his temporary DL and instructed a Corporal to take us to their
station. Corporal approached us and asked me (I was sitting in front with
driver) to alight. I refused. I told him that he lacked powers to order me out
of the vehicle. I rather told him that our driver could drive behind him to his
office.
He got incensed. His
mood changed. He then demanded keys to the vehicle which the driver handed
over. He returned to the Team leader, an inspector, to report. I sensed
trouble. Then, I made trouble first. I beckoned on the guy that flagged our
vehicle down and handed him a copy of my business card. I also showed him my ID
card and said to him 'you guys have gotten something wrong here and so, don't
let us drag it. This is who I am and I know what I am talking of'.
I asked him to talk to his boss. Pronto, he
took my business card to his boss and the temporary DL and keys were
immediately handed over to the driver with an 'oga no vex' from the policeman
who stopped us. But the Inspector alighted from their Hilux Van as our driver
was about driving off and pointing at me he said "that is how you go about
making trouble.
Common bicycle tyre you

Ordinary bicycle you don't have". I ignored his ignorance which he clearly
exhibited. But point was made. If he was right, he would not have released the
vehicle.
