President Goodluck Jonathan may dissolve the Governing Council of  Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka following the petition from Prof Greg Nwakoby that his inability to pay bribe of N60 Million denied him the position of Vice Chancellor which he won. Read the allegation:

The crisis rocking the contest for  vice chancellorship of Nnamdi Azikiwe University,Awka has deepened with Prof. Gregory Nwakoby,a strong contender for the position, accusing some members of the Governing Council of the University of subverting the selection process and demanding bribe of N30 million from him.

Nwakoby who claimed that he took part in the selection process for the vice chancellor's post and later allegedly emerged as top contender with 80.65 percent mark said yesterday that he is being denied the UNIZIK vice chancellorship because he refused to offer gratification of N30 million to some Council members .

Nwakoby, the current Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration, yesterday said that the alleged voting exercise involving the council members on Monday the 26th of May at which the person who he said previously came second was adjudged first and the best was illegal and unacceptable.

He said that it was wrong and vexatious for eleven members of the council to sit on Monday the 26th of May and conducted what he described as an illegal voting exercise at which his closest rival was declared winner of the vice chancellorship, as according to Nwakoby, when the selection exercise had indeed ended with himself (Nwakoby) emerging winner on the 24th of May.

Speaking on his grievances, Nwakoby alleged that some people are working against him because he refused to give out money and bribe them.
“ I was invited by some members and they told me that my other colleagues have brought money, and since I am marked as number one, I should go and look for #30million each to share among them.
“I refused to do such a thing because I believe in merit and transparency. I am a lawyer; I can’t compromise the integrity of legal profession. I have chosen to challenge that and I am willing to challenge it to the last by instituting legal action on them.” He declared.

Nwakoby further stressed that the conducted voting by the council members which they later claimed to have produced a vice chancellor that was earlier in the second position appeared to be stage-managed by some superior officers in the Aso Rock.
“How can the council aprobate and reprobate, the very council that conducted interview and somebody came first, now the person is no longer competent and qualified because I did not give money. Nwakoby stated.

He stressed that the prevailing rule in the appointment of vice chancellors is to the effect that once the interview and screening processes have ended and the result published, the person that emerges with the highest number of point would be made a vice chancellor and that such thing has never been subjected to any voting process.

Nevertheless, he urged President Jonathan to dissolve the council of UNIZIK for allegedly being corrupt and fraudulent, and to direct the council to issue him letter of appointment as the new VC.
Already, the National Youths Council, Anambra State chapter led by Ambassador Chibuzo Ekwenye have thrown their support for Nwakoby, saying that they will take to the streets to protest if the proper thing is not done.

Addressing journalists in Awka  yesterday,Ekwenye said they are reacting for whoever emerges as Vice Chancellor should focus on  the affairs of the teeming  youths in the country.
