French police stand in front of a house where the mayor of Bretteville-le-Rabet was found dead after he was fatally injured and castrated, authorities say.

Dominique Leboucher, 55, was allegedly mutilated and murdered in Bretteville-le-Rabet, Normandy, on Thursday night. He had been elected mayor of the town of 250 residents last March.

A French mayor was horrifically castrated and killed by a love rival who accused him of sleeping with his wife, it's reported.

Sources believe the suspected killer flipped out after learning of his wife's infidelity with the politician.

Cops have now launched a murder Details are still scant, however, and it's not yet known whether the alleged killer has been detained.

Bretteville-le Rabet, in the Calvados department and 10 miles from Caen, has just 250 residents.

Leboucher was elected mayor in March, according to Ouest France.
