Journalists Demand Obiano To Sack ASWAMA Boss Njideka Oraedu For Superintending Beating Up Of Journalist Obeta
A communiqué of the emergency meeting of the Correspondents’ Chapel held on Friday, May 16, 2014 to address the molestation, arrest and detention of Mr Okechukwu Obeta, Correspondent of The Source Magazine, and vice Chairman Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council on the orders of Mrs. Njideka Oraedum, Managing Director , Anambra State Waste management Agency(ASWAMA) for taking a photographs of her team enforcing sanitation exercise on Thursday 15th May 2014.
We hereby state as follows:
1. That the state chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), condemns in strong terms the manhandling, illegal detention and seizures of working tools including an IPad device and two telephones belonging to Mr. Okechukwu Obeta by the Managing Diector of ASWAMA, Mrs Njideka Oraedum.
2. That the chapel protests the undue excesses of the enforcement officials of the state sanitation agency lead by Mrs Oraedum
3. That the boastful outburst of the managing director, that “Nothing will happen (Onwero ihe ga emenu” and that the governor was aware of her actions smacks of arrogance and poverty of knowledge of the operations of journalists.
4. That Mrs Oraedum should immediately release the remaining items belonging to Mr. Obeta in her possession
5. That it should also be noted that the pictures and videos contained in the Ipad, especially those of landmark events in the family life of Mr Obeta were deleted before it was returned to him.
6. That the continued threat on the life of Mr. Okechukwu Obeta was not just a threat to him alone but also to the life of the entire journalists in the state.
7. That the chapel appreciates the timely and kind intervention of Commissioner of Police, Mr Usman Gwari
8. That the chapel also appreciates the personal visit of your Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Emeka Ozumba to commiserate with it on the incident.
9. That the governor should be wary of characters like Mrs Njideka Oraedum in his government as they may dent the image of his administration.
