The Diocese on the Niger, Anglican
Communion will on Saturday 31st May honour the second indigenous
bishop of the diocese, Rev Dr Jonathan .A. Onyemelukwe with a posthumous
award for his contribution to the diocese during his episcopacy.
Onyemelukwe who became the bishop of
the diocese in 70s ensured the completion of the All Saints Cathedral of the
Diocese in Onitsha, and also made landmark achievement in ensuring the growth
of the church in the state.
A release by Mr Enuma Okoli, a
writer and the author of Onyemelukwe’s biography; Onyemelukwe as the colossus
of our time, stated that the book is meant to give the late cleric a posthumous
honour and also to x-ray his life and present an example to others to follow.
Enuma said, “Onyemelukwe is a man
who is known as a true servant of God, he is an honest gentleman, and his
dedication to service is next to none. He is a man who touched the lives of
many people, and up till this day his footprint is still very visible in the
Niger Diocese and beyond.”
Most Rev Dr Jonathan Onyemelukwe who
rose to become Archbishop of the Diocese on the Niger and later Dean of
Anglican Church died after a long battle with illness on July 18th,
2011. He died at the ripe age of 80 and his illness was said to be associated
with old age.
The Christian community in Anambra
and in Nigeria described him as an exemplary Man-of-God who despite controlling
a huge congregation with large funds at his disposal preferred to be driven in
his rickety 505 Peugeot car.
He will be celebrated alongside
with his equally late wife, Nnedioranma Beatrice Onyemelukwe at the All Saints
Cathedral Church, Onitsha with thanksgiving mass by the Bishop of the Niger
Diocese, Rt Rev Owen Nwokolo.
