Chibok Saga: Ngige Calls For Sack Of Nigerian Security Chiefs

Former Governor Anambra State and Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Dr. Chris Ngige yesterday called all Nigerians irrespective of political affiliations to join hands with the Federal government to resolve the security challenge facing the country now.

Reacting to the abduction of about 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, Ngige described the incident as unfortunate and warned that security of the nation should not be played politics with stressing that the present security challenges could happen to any government not withstanding the political party.

He however said that the Chibok incident has brought to the fore the need for total overhaul of the nation’s security and the need to review the country’s defense and security budgetary spending.

He said, “The issue of the Chibok girls has brought to the fore the need for total overhaul of the Nigerian security. It has brought to the fore the need for us to look at our defense and security budgetary spending.

“First, the appropriation, then the oversight on the spending of the appropriation, these are very necessary now. The time for us to sit up, both the legislature and the executive is now, we must tell ourselves some home truth. Let us look ourselves eyeball to eye ball and tell ourselves the truth irrespective of political affiliations, the security of the country now concerns everybody.

Speaking further on the Chibok incident, the Senator said, “The issue of the abducted girls as you know is heartrending; it causes one to be sad. Just now that you asked this question I am already saddened by the situation again, it means that as fathers and even as parents that our children can just be plucked off like that without security being provided by the state.

“Section 14 of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 states that primarily security and welfare of the people is the cardinal job of any government am not trying to say that this two components are reciprocal things for government to take power, for people to surrender their sovereignty for government to protect them and make them happy, creating a friendly environment for them. But you can see that in this situation, it looks like everything has been operated, people are no longer safe the populace not very happy because there is poverty in the whole land.”

As if the security problems were because the President lacks the political will to tackle them Ngige said, “If I start answering this question I will delve into political coloration which I had earlier said is not right. I dont want to go there because it could happen to any president, the situation is a vicious circle.

“I was in PDP before and people were shouting, and I am in APC today and as a senator I am part of government, I am in the upper house, I have talked to you about budgetary spending, oversight function and I also talked about the appropriation  itselve, lets not play games now.”
