Following its
determination to create wealth and boosting food production in the state,
Anambra state government has mapped-out plans to train and empower over 5000
youths in all key areas of agricultural sector in the next few months.
Chief Nnamdi Mekoh, the State
Commissioner for Agriculture, who announced this when the members of All
Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) Anambra state chapter, and Progressive
Anambra Youths respectively paid a courtesy call to the ministry, explained
that the workshop would be organized at three basic centers across three senatorial
zones of the state including Anambra state College of Agriculture, Mgbakwu as a
kick-off point, and to be focused on poultry, fish farming, animal farming,
crop production, food production, processing and marketing of agricultural
products among others.
According to the Commissioner,
government would provide working capital, logistics and few other things needed
in setting-up the business to the trainees as a way of absorbing more of its
teeming populace in agriculture for wealth creation, sustainability,
entrepreneurship, massive food production and exportation, and heaven for
foreign and local investors.
He added that the ministry would
procure 100 tractors, fertilizers, hybrids quality seeds and seedlings in
quantum, excluding bank loans and similar empowerment gestures to be
distributed to farmers in the state this planting season with a view to
ensuring enabling environment for mechanized farming to thrive, noting also
that better condition for granting loans has been drafted for betterment of the
entire populace, especially the rural farmers and those willing to join hands
in moving the nation forward through the sector.
Mekoh, therefore charged
Anambrarians to support the government on its giant strides to affect their
lives positively by judiciously utilizing the opportunity.
While, Governor Willie Obiano’s
Special Assistant (S.A)on Fishery, Mr. Emeka Iloghalu, who described his boss
one month in office as excellent, vowed that his office is ready to
reorient Anambrarians on the various ways of creating wealth through fish
farming.
In their respective speeches during
the separate visit, State Acting Chairman of AFAN, Dr. Alex Ebogha and his
counterpart from Progressive Anambra Youths, Mr. Nonso Okafor, pledged to
partner with the government in realization of its dreams through massive
mobilization and sensitization.
