National Chairman of the All
Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh yesterday announced that
32 citizens of Anambra state are in his scholarship scheme in various
institutions across the country.
Umeh announced this while awarding a
scholarship to University education to the most valuable player in the just
concluded maiden football tournament of Awka Diocesan Mary League Association,
Miss Ijeoma Okeke.
Umeh informed that in the past 8 years that his scholarship Board has granted 32 people scholarship as his way of giving back to the society.
He added that the aim of sponsoring the female
football competition is to discover talents that will join the Super falcons of
Nigeria in due course.
He further explained that the essence of such grass root tournament is to promote unity and love among the children of Awka Diocese and to encourage them to stay together, assuring them that the tempo will be sustained even as he regretted that female soccer has suffered great neglect in Nigeria.
Umeh said: “Female soccer is now a global affair and we can only get those that will play in the National team through this kind of tournament. These young girls have displayed great skills and you can agree with me that they have great potentials to achieve success in soccer if they choose that as a career” .

Okeke, who is now in SS1 in Holy Christ College, Awgbu, thanked the sponsor; Chief Victor Umeh for the gesture which she said will spur her to take her studies seriously, pointing out that it will brighten her future of becoming a graduate.
In her vote of thanks, the diocesan President of the Association, Philomena Ijeoma Okonkwo, a lawyer expressed happiness that Chief Umeh has empowered the female girls thorough the tournament saying that, “his understanding, wisdom and humility are qualities that do not pass uncelebrated”
Catholic Bishop of Awka diocese , Most Rev Dr Paulinus Ezeokafor represented by diocesan chancellor, Rev. Father Peter Akaenyi lauded Umeh for sponsoring the competition which according to him, it’s another way of preaching the gospel adding that, “sports in the real sense, units every society”
In the final match played yesterday, Adazi Region defeated Ekwuluobia Region, 3:1 to lift the trophy while Awka and Akpu Region came 3rd and 4th position respectively.
The highest goal scorers, Uju Akunne
and Maureen Ogaluonye went home with N20,000 each while the most valuable
player, Ijeoma Okeke gets scholarship with cash of N20,000.
