Anambra state command of
the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has graduated over 460 Special Marshals
from its performance re-appraisal exercise.
Sector Commander Anambra
state Command of FRSC, Mr Hyginus Uchenna Omeje said the training was to
ascertain their readiness to respond to road safety emergencies
in Anambra.
Speaking during the re-appraisal
exercise at Onitsha, Anambra on Thursday, Omeje said the re-appraisal
checks included checks on the drivers’ license, first aid box, torchlight and
whistle, among others.
Omeje who was represented
by Mr Anthony Metta, Onitsha Unit Commander of FRSC, said the periodic
exercise was meant to see the gap between expected performance and the actual
performance of the special marshals when called upon for duties.
He noted that the
special marshals had been key partners with the commission to achieve its
enviable track record in road accident reduction in the country.
On the exercise, the
commander noted that the special marshals had more than 60 per cent compliance
in having valid drivers’ license and vehicle documents.
His words: ``They had
performed wonderfully well in assisting us in road crashes reduction,
instilling discipline in motorists and maintaining traffic flow
in Anambra.
``I will also thank the
acting state coordinator for making sure the marshals are hardworking as well
as helping to weed out non-committed marshals,’’ he said.
He added further that
the exercise had availed the commission the opportunity to motivate special
marshals as well as lecture them on new operational guidelines.
Responding , the Acting
State Coordinator, Mr Ben Osaka thanked the corps marshal for bringing out new
special marshal guidelines, which had helped to sanitize the system as it gives
the Marshalls no choice but to have all tools needed to work.
His words: ``The
guidelines make it compulsory for a special marshal, who is on the road, to
have all necessary tools to respond to any incident, especially para-medic
tools such as the first aid box,’’ Osaka said.
He noted that the
marshals were consulting with the Red Cross to organise rescue and safety
lectures in June to keep its members abreast of what to do at any scene of a
road crash.
Osaka said the special marshals had been able to
instill discipline in Onitsha motorists, since most of them dread the
special marshals in blue more than the regular marshals in red.
