The Registrar/Secretary to Council,
Federal Polytechnic, Oko
Sir,

RE: COMMUNIQUE OF THE JOINT ACTION COMMITTEE ON TRADE UNIONS/APPOINTMENT OF RECTOR FOR FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, OKO

The Joint Action Committee on Trade Unions of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko met on March 10, 2014. JACTU discussed the confusion surrounding the expiration of the tenure of the rector of the institution, Professor Godwin Onu on March 10, 2014.

Recall sir, that JACTU made a communiqué dated January 31, 2014 addressed to the Chairman of Governing Council. In that communiqué, JACTU urged the Governing Council to begin a process of appointing a polytechnic generated rector in view of the fact that the tenure of Prof. Godwin Onu expires in March 2014. JACTU then resolved to reject further appointment of any rector outside the polytechnic system.

In that communiqué, JACTU recalled that the on-going ASUP nation-wide strike also predicates on the continued appointment of unqualified people as rectors. In that communique JACTU notes that ASUP congress of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko had in 2013 resolved to reject the appointment of any rector outside the polytechnic sector.

In a meeting with unions on campus convened by the Governing Council on February 1, 2014, JACTU expressed its displeasure over the style of leadership of Professor Godwin Onu and large scale administartive anomalies in the institution but was also unequivocal that his tenure expires in March and should not be renewed. JACTU also deposited its position in writing to the Governing Council as well as the Registrar and Secretary to the Council. Unfortunately, there was no reply to the communiqué. Instead of addressing issues contained in the communiqué, the only reply was the suspension of NASU chairman and the Secretary as well as undercurrent moves to deal with remaining union leaders. This silence and witch-hunting of union leaders and strong unionists is unacceptable.

Currently, members inundate union leaders with questions relating to the expiration of the tenure of Professor Godwin Onu on March 10. In the light of the above, JACTU strongly urges your office to speedily communicate in writing to unions, the position of the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. This will enable unions be informed with a view to taking a proper posture.

JACTU reiterates that the ultimatum issued by JACTU in relation to demands contained in communiqué of January, 2014 subsist and irreversible. Consequently, JACTU shall continue to withdraw services even when the national strike is over.

Accept sir, the assurances of our utmost regards.
