A Non Governmental Organisation (NGO),
Someone Cares Africa, on Wednesday decried the growing insecurity and
confinement life-style in Anambra.
The National President of the group,
Mrs Abigail Nwoye, disclosed this to newsmen after a youth
empowerment and re-orientation programme which the NGO held
in Onitsha, Anambra.
Nwoye noted that the insecurity
had reached an alarming level with people retiring to their homes as early as 7
p.m. for the fear of hoodlums, miscreants and armed criminals.
She said that with the situation,
most residents do not drive expensive cars or move in some particular areas
after 6 p.m.
``We are appealing to the newly
sworn-in, governor, Chief Willie Obiano, to help us find a holistic
solution to the issue of growing insecurity, tension and apprehension
in Anambra.
``Anambra is turning into a big
prison where you are not free to move as you like especially
in Onitsha and some parts of Nnewi.
``As a lady you don’t wear
gold neck-laces and ear rings, mobile phones or other gadgets
in Onitsha especially at the Upper Iweka axis.
``This group of boys had been
operating in that axis for ages and nobody cares to check what they are doing
with reckless abandon even in broad-day light.
``In this same state, we have a lot
of people welding different kinds of guns with different sorts of security
names both official and unofficial,’’ she added.
In his contribution, the
Anambra State President of the group, Mr Tony Chidozie, admonished
youths to be creative and hardworking not minding their background.
Chidozie said that the group
had empowered 126 youths in three communities of Awka, Nkpor and Enugwu-Ukwu in
the past two years.
He said that while those that
indicated interest in agriculture especially fish farming were given loans of
N70, 000 each, tailors and artisans were given N50, 000 as take-off grants.
Chidozie explained that 213
Septuagenarians also benefited from the NGO’s empowerment as they were given
food items worth over N1 million in the past two years.
``You should know that nobody cares
for you more than you can care for yourself; so you must be focused, creative
and hardworking pursuing anything you lay your hands with youthful zeal.
``You must built synergy with other
enterprising youths through social networks as well as form the habit of
reading wide to keep yourselves abreast with the latest in all facet of life,’’
he said.
In his remarks,
the coordinator of the group in Onitsha,
Mr Obieze Chimbo, urged youths to take advantage of the opportunity
created by the Subsidy Reinvestment Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) at various
local governments to be employed.
